ANSC 3270 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Passive Immunity, Colostrum, Immunosuppression
Document Summary
Why should we care about diseases in ruminants. Reduces performance (growth, lactation, reproduction, product quality) Increases use of antibiotics (microbial resistance and food security) Disease happens because agents fight with immune system. Effectiveness of immune system to fight the agent. Environment includes everything not related to genetics. The 3 elements all affected by management. Certain periods the ruminants are higher susceptibility to diseases. Some herd have more diarrhea than pneumonia depending on management. Esp first and second week (peak in incidence of diseases) More than 16% of the calves in the second week. Weaning happen around 8-9 weeks (still have relatively high incidence) 5-6 layers of tissue separating fetal and maternal blood. No passage of antibodies from mom to calves. No ig and immune system inefficient (minimize exposure to agents) High concentration of ig = passive immunity. The most prevalent problems in dairy calves. Older = immune system development = more efficient.
