Pelleting < expanding < extruding (most heat and pressure: principle of pelleting: rollers push feed through die. Due to injection of steam and friction, feed is heated, pellets are formed and feed digestibility is increased. Use the crumble for species like chicks, piglets as a creep feed. Hammermill: mixer (if feeding a mash would stop at this step) Pellet mill: cooler (if feeding pellets would stop at this step) Crumbled: sifter (where small particles can be collected then reused) Packer (packed into bags or loaded onto a truck to be delivered) Prevents separation of feed: preventing pigs from sorting. Improves ow of feed: if feeding a mash could have blockage in the feeder bin. Improves feed hygiene: if pigs defecate/urinate in feeder this will be more of an issue with a mash diet. Allows more e ective use of some co-products.
