Achieve maturity (~parity 3 or 4: they are still growing by parity 4 so we need to provide enough nutrients for growth/ maintenance. Recover losses of previous lactation: nutrient partitioning lectures: energy and pd models for gestating sows. Do not allow for: excess gain of weight or condition. Limit maternal weight loss: some body weight loss will occur regardless of how much we feed. Desirable body weight changes in sows: refer to graph on slide: With gestation we see body weight increase due to products of conception are growing but also sow may be growing her self. With farrowing there is a sharp body weight loss (due to piglets born and loss of uids/ placenta) She begins her next farrowing at a lower body weight than the rst parity.
