Process in a culture that are designed to help maintain orderly life. Funcionalist kind of approach, but not focused on social deviance. The assumpion that most of the ime, most of the people will behave. Unconscious (don"t have to think about them), unwriten. Learned through violaion of the norms typically early in life. Example: lineup behavior, puing up hands in class: laws. Associated with chiefdoms and states (agriculture and industrial socieies) Regular and predictable because they are based on norms and older laws. Ignorance of the law is no excuse : you are supposed to anicipate what behaviours are within the norm of your society that may be reinforced and what behaviours are not. Deter violaing norms through ridicule, gossip, teasing. Example: barker and the maisin man who lipped in his boat threw a feast for everyone who also fell over when he fell but barker was not invited (reciprocity) Adjudicated by a professional group: lawyers, judges.
