Fred wilson is a good example of providing representational critique. Representational critique is embedded in identity politics. Museum recongizes some identities and ignores others: selecting certain material culture and omitting others. Effort to figure out how museums work and how displays work (labels, panels, brochures) Through this, they will identify what they think is important and what is less important. Controversy with museums arise in 1980s and on: people begin to protest exhibits. Documented the maori in new zealand by painting their portraits: hyper-real with face tattoos. Goldie creates his own version based loosely off of the raft of medusa by theodore. Gericault: places maori figures in the raft. Maori become very interested in the exhibit with the portraits of different face tattoos they can recognize some of their ancestors. In recent years a huge spike of interest in museums arise.
