During middle ages, catholic church"s emphasis on spiritual realm discouraged realistic representation of physical world in art. Renaissance saw re-emergence (rebirth) of realistic portrayals of nature and human figure by artists inspired by ancient greek and roman art and culture. Early renaissance works of 14th and 15thc. show lingering medieval features. Renaissance masterpieces of late 15th and early 16thc. show harmonious proportions and balanced compositions associated with ideals of classical world. Italian scholar and poet in renaissance, one of the earliest humanists. Rediscovery of cicero"s letters often credited for initiating 14th century renaissance.
