Plastid that can be molded, lexible based on colour. Thylakoids photosyntheic machinery on a system of latened membrane sacs. Outside the thylakoid but inside inner envelope is the stroma. Several hundred chl molecules act together as one photosynthetic unit. The antenna system harvests light of various wavelengths and transfers excitaion to the reacion centre. Photosynthesis consists of light dependent and light independent (dark) reacions. Light dependent: solar energy absorbed and stored in atp (cell"s primary source of chemical energy) and nadph (main source of reducing power) Dark reactions: carbohydrates synthesize from co2 using energy from atp/nadph. Plasids are surrounded by a loose er cage. Proteins and lipids exchange between plasids and the er. Plasids have their own dna and ribosomes but are also controlled by nuclear encoded proteins. Chloroplasts have 6 sub-compartments to which proteins can be delivered: outer chloroplast membrane. Inter-membrane space: stroma, thylakoid membrane, thylakoid lumen. Nuclear encoded genes synthesized in cytosol and imported through pores in envelope.
