Document Summary

To predict the outcomes of a cross. For one gene with 2 alleles --> 1x2 = 2^1 = 2 possible gametes. Combining the 2 gametes = 2x2 = 4 possible diploid genotypes. For two genes with 2 alleles --> 2x2 = 2^2 = 4 possible gametes. Combining 4 diff gametes from each of the 2 parents = 4x4 = 16 possible diploid genotypes! But --> not all are different genotypes! (some repeats!) For n different genes assorting independantly --> (2x2x2)n = 2^n possible gametes! For 23 different genes (all on different human chromosomes) ==> 2^23 = The further apart 2 genes are on a chromosome, the more likely they are to assort independently. If far apart --> likely to get separated! If close together --> likely to stay together! (co-segregate!) Reason why most yellow-bodied flies also have white eyes! Of the 21 possible dihybrid crosses he could"ve done, only one of them wouldn"t have assorted independently!
