As with most things in conservaion biology, there are excepions to all rules. Diversity is not uniformly distributed, at any scale (local to global) Explaining the laitudinal gradient of species diversity has long been and sill remains the holy. The creaion of diversity: the accumulaion of species in ime (geologic and ecological ime scales) and space (coninents, islands, plots) Area is important but cannot be the only factor. The maintenance of diversity: the factors that determine the relaive balance of species arrivals and species exincions. Factors hypothesized to inluence diversity: large scale (spaial and temporal) Disturbance (too much, too litle: local scale (species interacions. Support: tropics free from glaciaion, speciaion takes ime, dispersal takes ime. Problem: no region of the planet was free from the efects of glaciaion. Glaciaion: the tropics were more disrupted than originally believed (drought, ire, expansion of savanna: wold gets drier because most of the earth"s moisture was locked up in ice.
