Physiology: the study of how living organisms function, integration of all the different organs and systems, anatomy and physiology are closely related though. Claude bernard father of modern physiology: our internal environment remains consistent despite changes in the external environment, provides stable condition for cells. Walter cannon coined the term homeostasis, to describe the relative stability of the internal environment. Homeostasis: key to our physiology, regulated in part by the endocrine system. 3 components: sensor, integrating centre, effector (for example endocrine hormones) Something happens to change something in the body, for example temperate. The change in temperature activates a sensor. Sensors send messages to the integrating centre. Integrating centre sends out effectors to bring the body back to normal. Homeostasis is always a negative feedback loop it has to shut itself off: the only exception is labour and delivery. Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in canada. Thyroid disorders: affects 5% of the population and increases with age.
