BIOM 3200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Nuclear Receptor, Basal Metabolic Rate, Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate
Document Summary
Synergisic: two or more hormones working together to produce a desired result either by complimentary or addiive efects. Permissive: the presence of a hormone enhances the target organ"s responsiveness to its hormone. Antagonisic: the acion of one hormone can antagonize the acion of another: amines are not water soluble and can therefore not freely travel to the receptor through the aqueous plasma porion. Instead their mechanism of acion is via carrier proteins that allow them to be transported to the target receptor. In general, lipophilic hormones bind to nuclear hormone receptors which funcion within the cell"s nucleus and acivate geneic transcripion. In the case of steroid hormones, the receptor is usually located cytoplasm whereas in thyroid hormones (amines) the receptor is in the nucleus bound to dna. Pepide and protein hormones rely on secondary messengers such as camp for their mechanism of acion.
