October 3rd 2014 agoge and greek literature: 5th century (tragedy) Theatre emerged from the worship of dionysus, a religious festival was the origins of theatre. This makes sense when you look at a lot of the inspiriation for theatre was derived from their mythology. Tragedy comes from tragos + ode meaning goat songs (reference to satyrs) Thespis (6th century bc) was the first recognised author and performer of theatre. He introduced the spoken lines, and standardized use of masks to portray emotion. Dionysia (534 bc) is one of the original theatres from when the tragedys became important (name is a reference to dionysus). Choerilus (160 he wrote and 13 were winners [another competition]) was an early contributers. Theatre was yet another creative and competitive drive for the athenians. Aeschylus was an early tragedy writer, who wrote the persae, which is based loosely on the greco persian wars. He was actually a veteran of the battle at salamis.
