ENGL 3340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: White Supremacy, Charles George Gordon, Ottoman Empire
Document Summary
Allochronism ("denial of coevalness"): a specialization of time that sees the denial of the ethnographic other as existing in the same time as the observer, allocating the other instead to a remote past (johannes fabian) Traveling to africa allows the white man to access the past yet they get to leave and return to modernity while the natives cannot. They have the freedom to enter in and exit when they choose. They can return to the past to strengthen their atavism etc. in landscapes "lost in time" and then re-emerge to "civilization" Orientalism: the tendency of the west to define itself in opposition to the east in a series of binaries that privilege the west (edward said) Things that the white man does not like become projected on the orient. This is not talking about the asia but the middle east. The way in which westerners represented others remains important in cultural studies and colonialism.
