Colonies are inspected to verify they are in good condition or to correct problems. Before opening a hive containing a colony of honey bees make sure you are wearing protective clothing and a veil, and also make sure you have a functioning smoker. It is also easier to manage bees during a nectar flow than in times of dearth. Additionally, make sure to avoid jerky or rapid movements when manipulating bees to reduce the chances of being stung. Once your smoker is lit and you are equipped and ready to open a hive, stand at the back or side of it (never at the bee flight path in front of the hive entrance). Puff smoke two or three times through the hive entrance and wait for a few seconds. Then, lift the outer lid and place it on the ground.
