ENVS 2210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Temperate Climate, Tropical Climate, Early Summer
Document Summary
Unit 5 colony reproduction and sex determination. Temperate climate swarming season occurs during mid to late spring or early summer. Swarming takes place when resources are abundant, which favours reproduction. Signs of swarming 1) workers reduce their foraging activity. Swarm departure: bees accumulate at the hive entrance (form a beard , presence of queen cells in the brood nest. Absconding when an adult bee leaves the hive: bees cluster like a swarm and scout bees find a suitable place to build a new nest, some bees (ex. Africanized bees) are more likely to abscond: absconding is caused by several different factors, ex. hunger or frequent disturbances of the nest, caused when they are constantly robbed by other bees or manipulated by the beekeeper. Important that honeybee queens have large access to a large drone supply from many colony sources to mate with in: thus prevents spotty brood patterns due to lack of enough sex alleles.
