Zimmerman: the north american family is close to becoming a domestic institution. The family institution is bigger than the sum of it"s parts. Women have increased in the labour force: 42% in 1976, 63% in 2008. Increase in opportunities for women: service sector: secretaries, flight attendants, wait staff, cashiers. Jobs don"t necessarily pay very well: non-standard work: part time, care work, shift work, nursing staff. The relationship between work and family is dynamic and changes across the lifespan: young mothers returning to work, older men retiring and taking part in child care. Education is connected to a variety of advantages: economic well-being, health and longer life span. Income buys you happiness through a safety net. Education is something we do early in life that impacts us later in life. Gender difference in the relationship between education and the family: men become more attractive partners, women more likely to end up in a less flexible career.
