Characterized by excessive anxiety and worry that has been present for more than 3 months (more days than not) Associated with at least 3 of: restlessness, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbance. Social anxiety disorder: marked fear about social situations. Separation: feel distress when not with caregiver. School avoidance/phobia: fear, might complain of physical symptoms to avoid school. People with anxiety are more sensitive than others to perceived threat. Related to the areas of the brain that regulate the fear system. Note animal studies on early life experience and later fearfulness and stress response. Culture that show inhibition, compliance and obedience also show increased levels of fear. High prevalence: 6% any anxiety disorder in children and youth, 25% lifetime, 25% adolescents, 18% adults. Compulsions = behaviours that one must use to respond or quell the thoughts. Characterized by repetitive, intrusive thoughts (urges, images) and feelings followed by behaviours in response to these thoughts/feelings.
