Chapter 1 - caregiving and educating: philosophy and practice! Child-centred de nitions (3 interpretations): hands off , self-directed, independent play with adults rarely involved, self-directed but the adult follows the child"s lead and are involved, children have the opportunities for real and meaningful input into the curriculum ! Chapter 2 - getting in focus: observing infants, toddlers and twos! Methods: participant observation (you are a part of observation), nonparticipant observation (you watch from the sidelines) , naturalistic (natural, don"t do a thing like going to a playground), structured/experimental (adding in something and seeing what happens)! Naturalistic descriptive recording detailed records of everything the child says/does selected recording of behaviour/ events that the adult considers pertinent. Holistic view of development ef cient way to document pertinent behaviours. Regular recordings detailing important developmental progressions, regressions or activities. Identify individualized pattern of development: specimen records. Prepared formats used to determine occurrences of behaviour. Behaviour is described in a snapshot at predetermined time intervals.
