FRHD 2270 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Attention Seeking, Cognitive Development, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Adding a new sibling can be distressing for an older child: may become withdrawn, regress to childish behaviour in response to shared parental attention/affection. Distress can be avoided if: parents remain responsive to older child"s needs, fathers become more involved with older children. Older siblings provide: care and comfort, teach rules of play and cooking simple foods, if older children do well in school, so do younger children, stability in relationship quality. Children who get along as preschoolers, get along as adolescents. Higher self-esteem and motivation to succeed: more pressure for mastery, higher intelligence, leadership, autonomy, and maturity. Less accepted by peers: lack practice in conflict resolution experienced with siblings. Bobbitt-zeher: during kindergarten, interacting with peers both in school and during extra-curricular activities allows only children to overcome any disadvantages, no difference in popularity during grades 7-12 for only children and children with siblings.
