Elites, athletes, academics, deviants, others: help with idenity deiniion, role of school composiion. Promotes dominance in hierarchy: the higher up you are the more sarcasm you dish out and the less you receive. In tradiional cultures, directed at adults, reinforces community standards. Non-physical forms of aggression: gossiping, spreading rumours, snubbing, excluding. In western socieies, crowd deiniion and membership becomes important during adolescence. Why: cogniive changes (these are abstract concepts, idenity development, peers become an important social reference group. Becomes yet more difereniated more niches for people to it into less hierarchical and less inluenial. Dormitory life: oten includes an element of sexual experimentaion. Men"s house life: socializes adolescent boys to adult males roles. Does this sill hold true: makes heterosexual assumpion, age of marriage has risen, and serious relaionships are not formed unil later.
