Observed score = true score (i. e. , midterm grade) + systematic error + random error. Leads to either: construct of interest: achievement, constructs of disinterest: motivation, test-wise, anxiety, english proficiency, systematic errors (don"t change much, random errors: grading or recording mistakes. Need to make sure you are measuring achievement, not motivation. Different levels represent different tools: lower levels less sophistication (measuring simpler info, higher levels more sophistication. Nominal: naming (i. e. , male or female), frequencies. Ordinal: on continuum, intervals not equal; frequencies, median.
