LECTURE 6
Schedules of Reinforcement
• Plan or rule outlining which occurrences of behaviour will be reinforced
• Continuous reinforcement
• Intermittent reinforcement
o Not continuous
o 3 types
▪ Ratio
▪ Interval
Duration
Ratio Schedules
• Behaviour is reinforced based on the number of times that it occurs
• Fixed ratio
o Every set of number of incidents of the operant receives reinforcement
o Used in sequence of increasing ratios
o Post-reinforcement Pause
o Optimal ratio
o Ratio strain
• Variable ratio
o Operad’s receive reiforceet sporadically around the average number of behaviours
o No Post-Reinforcement Pause
o Less risk of ratio strain
o Capacity for higher optimal ratio
• Progressive ratio
o Like fixed ratio
o Ratio requirement increased by a specific amount about each reinforcer
Interval Schedules
• The first instance of the behaviour is rewarded after a period of time where no rewards are
given
• Fixed interval
o First occurrence of the behaviour, after a fixed period of time, will be rewarded
o Post-Reinforcement Pause
o Behaviour increases as the interval end approaches
• Variable interval
o Length of the interval changes unpredictably around an average
o Produces a moderate, steady rate of behaviour
o Little to no Post-Reinforcement Pause
• Limited hold
o Period of time in which the behaviour must occur
o Used with interval schedules – either variable or fixed interval schedule
