Geography lecture (chapter 6) Landscape as a human system Ordinary landscapes  Are constructed to reflect everyday lives  Landscapes in which you can live in and change (behaviours, perception, values)  Where people live and work  Examples: suburban neighbourhood Symbolic landscape  Constructed to represent values and hopes  These values and hopes are held by whoever has constructed this landscape eg. developers and financers  Values derive meaning. As you experience a landscape you feel senses of power that those who created it want you to feel  Epic 1. Landscapes of power  Capital cities, showcase capitals  Gated communities  Cottage country 2. Landscapes of stigma  1) Paraiah landscapes: to be avoided, inner city ghettos, 1 nations reservation  2) landscapes of despair: eg. tent city
