GEOG 3490 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sustainable Tourism, Main Source
Document Summary
It could be argued that tourism that includes air travel is by definition unsustainable. As discussed in this course, tourism is also one of the biggest growing industries worldwide and for many countries, such as the caribbean, their main source of economic prosperity. With such a strong economic impact it would be difficult for there to be a drastic change towards sustainable tourism unless it was also just as profitable as tourism today. No country is going to volunteer to lower their gdp just for the sake of being more environmentally friendly unless there was also an economic benefit, whether that is through tax breaks, government incentives, or long-term financial benefits. Specifically, when assessing air travel, unfortunately it is still the most conveniently done by plane, especially when travelling large distances (i. e. canada to china or europe etc. ). It would be very inconvenient to travel via boat/ship or by train to places so far from.
