James i (r. 1603-1625) (james vi of scotland: he was a protestant, start of the union between england and scotland, union would also cause problems. > the right to impose taxes: had a lot of bargaining power, could counter demand the king and the queen tried to avoid work with the parliament. The long parliament (1640-1653) leader : ollivar cromwell. Oliver cromwell (1599-1658: he defeated the kings troops. New model army: won many battles, held charles captive, many religious groups, moderate members are getting worried, parliament tried to dissolve the army, army intervened and tried to take over, got west minister. Lord protector tried to convince him tobecome king: but he belived in the republic, he dies in 1658.
