Trade was of extreme importance, very dependent on their water-ways to connect them to their trade routes. Conquered city after city: venice was the most aggressive city-state. Guilds and monopolies were created: one of the most important power factors in a city state. Trade was of extreme importance with other surrounding areas like asia.
