Renaissance means "rebirth": a break/change from the previous "middle ages" which followed the antiquity. Petrarch (1304-1374): father of humanism, first tourist for his love to travel out of pure curiosity. Radiated to all parts of the continent, eventually. Collected latin manuscripts, preferring antique literature over the works of his time (middle ages) Boccaccio (1312-1375): writer of the "decameron" (containing 100"s of tales told by 10 people in ten days who had fled the plague) This region of the world was not peaceful: these city states had much tension in between them which would led to feuding and violence. Trade was of extreme importance, very dependent on their water-ways to connect them to their trade routes. Conquered city after city: venice was the most aggressive city-state. Guilds and monopolies were created: one of the most important power factors in a city state. Trade was of extreme importance with other surrounding areas like asia.
