Document Summary
Women were highly revered b/c they could harvest and take care of food (old = wise woman) Iroquois were agriculturists (looked after corn, wheat and berries) Plateau area (women looked after salmon - llet, smoke and store sh) In blackfoot tribes on plains, they captured women and used them for breeding purposes (one man could have several rank ordered wives) Athapascans did the same, practiced female infanticide, especially if food resources were low, male children were seen as more useful for hunting, guarding and expanding territory etc . Considerable variation for how important it was between bands. Natives were skilled at trading, building alliances before europeans came (we know this from archeological digs) In contrast, the neutral tribes did not trade outside the community (didn"t have canoes or how to use them - so they couldn"t travel very far) When europeans come, they try to tap into transportation routes, alliances, language interpreters.
