They determined that crusades can be used for more than the original reasons: more than security of eastern christendom (byzantines) If you are baptized as a christian/catholic and you deviate from the church you are a heretic. Its purposely deviating from the religion after you"ve been baptized into it. Wanted to define christianity: the basic scriptures are laid out in the bible for everyone to readbut it was. How they are interpreted that was important and that was left to the clergy to decide. Late 12th c return to simple church: sects: waldensians, peter waldo, beguines, st. mary of oignie. They couldn"t understand why it was that evil could exist if the world was created by the all powerful god. (why would he make it that way?) Christian explanation has to do with the idea of free will. Cathars = unconvinced by the free will crap. And they believed in two gods in god and satan.
