The seljuk/selcuk/saljuq (turks) are one tribe (clan) of the oguz/oghuz clan (tribe). 1055: selcuk turks get to baghdad, and defeat the buyids. 1071: selcuk turks defeat the byzantine army then start moving into anatolia (?) this begins the turkification and islamification of anatolia [byzantine empire is shrinking] Competition over the holy cities (jerusalem) which interrupts christian pilgrimage routes. A lot of political strife within the dynasty. Eventually the only surviving part of the selcuk empire is in anatolia but before they take control of mecca/medina/domascus and they fight the fatimids for jerusalem. They actively promote sunni islam by establishing madrasas / nizamiyyas in which to promote. This triggers the wrath of another group of people the assassins who are not sunni (come out of the fatimid dynasty) they are ismail"i shi"ites. Selcuk of rum: endure until the 14th century. Konya is a major point on the map for selcuks. Persian becomes the language of the court.
