Grapes have been partnered with man throughout the development and spread of civilization. This crop and its wine culture was not developed in all regions. Grapes have been of great importance to many early peoples in the transition from nomadic to village culture. Well documented in early writings and hieroglyphs. Has followed european settlers and colonists all over the new world. Grape growing (viticulture) and winemaking (oenology) are ancient occupations and very well documented throughout history. Originally concentrated in the fertile crescent and the mediterranean basin. Spread by the explorers and conquering armies of the ancient world as well as european colonists. Origins in asia minor the black sea and the inland caspian sea, an area bordered by north eastern. Turkey, northern iraq, azerbaijan, and georgia is where the european/ caucasian grape (vitis vinifera l. ) domestication is paralleled with the transition of humans from nomadic hunter gatherers to sedentary villagers with semi-permanent agricultural pursuits.
