The process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. An individual who is using their sense (sight, hearing, taste, touch, scent) to observe the world (a situation, object moment, or series of moments) Past experience, motives, emotions will affect how you perceive a given situation e. g. police people; if they"re tired, or their past experiences tell them that this neighbourhood is quiet, they might not be as observant and might miss something. The environment we"re in will alter our perception (e. g. police walking in a low crime area vs high crime area) Dictates what we focus on and what we see. The tendency for the perceptual system to defend the perceiver against unpleasant emotions. We see what we want to see, hear what we want to hear. Workplace: employees are given tasks and focus on the parts they want to focus on.
