Organizational culture is a cognitive framework consisting of assumptions and values of the organization. Dominant culture is the distinctive personality of the organization which reflects its core value. Provides a sense of identity for its members. Creation and maintenance: company founders, interaction with others in organization, experience with environment, tools used to transmit an organization"s culture include, symbols, stories, jargon, ceremonies, statements of principle. Ice berg effect: at the top- artificts of organizational culture (physical structures, language, rituals, stories) At the bottom- organizational culture (beliefs, values, assumptions) Process of how individuals learn values and expectation of organization. Learning process - newcomers make sense of organizations dynamics. Adjustment process - newcomers adapt to their new work environment. Problems with strong cultures: barriers to change, barriers to diversity: strong culture suppresses dissenting values, barrier to mergers, focus on mental models that could be limiting.
