Was first proponent of hand-washing as an important process for physicians in hospitals. Pioneered the use of a clean (free-from microbes) operating area for his patients. Also met with some resistance to his methods at first. Managed to keep the death rate down by spraying the operated wounds with carbolic acid. Credited with discovering penicillin came from a mould. Dmitry ivanovsky (1864-1920): first realised that causative agent of tobacco mosaic disease was much saller than the microbes known at the time. Martinus beijerinck (1851-1931(cid:895): (cid:396)ealised the age(cid:374)t of the disease (cid:272)ould(cid:374)(cid:859)t (cid:271)e a (cid:271)a(cid:272)te(cid:396)ial (cid:272)ell. Wendell stanley (1904-1971): processed 4000kg of infected tobacco leaves and purified the infectious virus by crystallization: virology was born. Understand how we define what a microbe is.
