Archaeal extremists: thermophiles o o o o o o. Pyrococcus furiousus: a thermophile as well as a barophile. Can only survive at temps >70 c (prefers 100 c) Thermophile like temps >60 c can be bacteria or archaea. Hyperthermophiles like temps >90 c almost always archaea: world record is 122 c for methanopyrus. Largely uncultured: anaerobic heterotrophs, sulfate reducers or nitrite-reducing methanothrophs. Depth of ocean has much denser salinity and greater pressure and water doesn"t freeze. Likes hypersaline pools and in some extreme salt pools may be the only life form present. Phototroph that forms fragile sheets that loat near the surface of the water. A very important group: able to generate methane from co2 and h2, formate, acetate and other small molecules. *basic reacion: co2 + 4h2 ch4 + 2h2o. Rely on bacterial species to provided them with essenial nutrients. Next to cows, termites produce the second largest amount of methane!
