Document Summary

Monday november 12 t h: mechanisms of biological control, reduce pathogen inoculum, resource competition: if you can get saprophytes to obtain nutrients you can starve out the pathogens, as saprophytes will absorb the nutrients faster! Parasitize the pathogen: hyperparasites (parasites of other parasites) nutrients are being taken up by other microbes in the soil. Saprophyte trichoderma: able to produce enzymes such as chitinases and beta glucanases which can attack fungal cell walls which releases the nutrients from the fungus and can kill the fungus. It will wrap around the hyphae and use it as a food source: vampyrellid amoebae: small animals that have adapted to feeding on fungi. Vampyrellid comes from that they put little holes in the fungi that look like holes of a vampire bat. Amoeba move around in the soil, and come out in the back end, digests a hole, crawls in and starts to consume the cytoplasm.
