Precursor styles to jazz include blues, ragtime, various folk traditions, minstrelsy, dance music and brass band music. They all played a role in forming new jazz music. Improvisation: the process of spontaneously creating fresh melodies over the continuously repeating cycle of chord changes of a tune. The improviser may depend on the contours of the original tune, or solely on the possibilities of the chords" harmonies. Polyphonic texture: two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody. Syncopation: variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected which make part or all of a tune or piece of music off-beat.
