Unit 09: rock explodes, recording techniques & new styles. Rock genres that developed out of the psychedelic, hippie-inluenced music of the 60s. Divided along colour lines, mainly dominated by white arists & gender divide also deepens: rock becomes more & more symbolic of male power & virility. Technology allows electronic manipulaion becomes compact & afordable, more experimentaion. Stock market crash of 1973-1974, high unemployment, high inlaion. Oil crisis of 1973 due to an embargo by the arab members of opec. Music relected darker outlook of the period, try to escape through fantasy. Rock music in decline, more corporate rock of the late 70s. Arists in 1966-1969 changed focus from single to album, & from dancing music to listening music. Idea behind hippie aestheic to rock is that the musician is an arist who has a responsibility to produce sophisicated music using whatever means are at his or her disposal.
