Document Summary

What is a fluid: molecules are far enough apart that they can slide past each other. Fluid is inside cells: intracellular fluid, 2/3 of all water is found in the cell. Fluid is outside of cells: extracellular fluid, 1/3 of all water is found outside the cell. Body fluids are made of : water with stuff dissolved in it, electrolytes. What do fluids do: dissolves and transports nutrients and waste. Water insoluble substances are transported with the help of chylomicrons (lipoproteins: protect us! Amniotic fluid protects a fetus: moisten us! Saliva, tears, mucus: help maintain body temperature. Being made of mostly water helps us keep cool! Sweating and vasodilation: water is involved in chemical reactions. Water is often needed to break 2 molecules apart. Water is often released when 2 molecules are joined together. Water balance: water intake = water output.
