NUTR 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ghrelin, Hip Bone, Leptin
Document Summary
Visceral adipose tissue= fat around the abdominal region. Visceral adipose tissue is more metabolically active and more visceral adipose tissue is related to increased risk of disease. People who carry their weight in the waist region have more visceral adipose tissue. Apples are at higher risk of chronic disease. Measure halfway between ribs and hip bone or an inch above belly button. Easy to do and gives an idea of disease risk. 80% of children whose parents are both obese are obese too. The more fat you have, the more leptin you make. In mice it causes a decrease in appetite and prevents obesity. Other hormones of interest are regulators of hormone signalling. Consuming more kcals than you burn causes weight gain. A wide variety of tempting foods makes us eat more. Portion size can affect how much you end up eating. Both not getting enough exercise and too much sedentary activity are related to greater risk of obesity.
