Document Summary

Normal cell growth and differentiation: many of the body"s cells retain the ability to grow, divide and differentiate throughout life, growth and differentiation is controlled, such that the normal structure of a particular tissue is maintained, rate of cell proliferation must balance the rate of differentiation (leading to cell death, if there is a discrepancy between these rates, then the tissue will become abnormal, both at the gross and histologic level. Resulting mass of abnormal tissue from neoplasia is termed a neoplasm or tumor: gross and microscopic appearance of tumors can vary enormously, as can their behaviour, effects, and response to therapy, oncology: study of tumors. Seven fundamental traits of cell behavior that together lead to a malignant phenotype: evading apoptosis, self sufficiency in growth signals, insensitivity to anti growth signals, tissue invasion and metastasis, limitless replicative potential, sustained angiogenesis, emerging hallmarks of cancer = reprogramming of energy metabolism and evasion of the immune system.
