PHIL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lockean Proviso
Document Summary
Rawls want equal opportunity for everyone and crystalizes the idea of being equal. Considered to be right wing and gets negativity because of assumptions but the one we are looking at is different: Libertarian view: the free market is inherently just, and redistributive taxation is inherently wrong, a violation of people"s right. If we assume that each person is entitles to the goods they currently possess (their holdings), then a just distribution is simply whatever distribution results from people"s free exchanges. You are entitled to everything you currently own. The only way to take what you got in your pocket, bank and give it to others is just (fair) if it comes from your free choices. 3 principles: a principle of transfer: whatever is justly acquired can be freely transferred. Where do we get the money to build roads and community centers etc. --> from taxes. Rawls thinks a poor man shouldn"t starve just because he has nothing to trade.
