Pols 2080 lecture 4 september 22, 2016. 1420-1600: the age of seafaring and high exploration, new optimistic time in europe, people are setting out all over the world to look for precious natural resources. Also to spread christianity: portuguese and spanish were the key players here, essentially how colonialism started. 1600-1780: first age of global empire, french, english and dutch also begin to search for land, the period ended with us independence. Due to the british withdrawing their roots. 1780-1870: informal control, the napoleonic wars happening in europe, the british empire emerged as the dominant power. Because the french lost much power . 1870-1914: time of high imperialism, much more of the world becomes populated, this is the colonialism that has effected the world most, much to do with industrialization in europe. Looking for investment/ market opportunities: the scramble of africa took place, ww1 began. 1945-1960s: decolonization, this was the end of colonialism.
