Pols 2100: the legitimacy component of states. Not just about power but what sustains states and keeps the inside stable. Legitimacy creates its own kind of authority. Types of legitimacy according to weber: tradition, historical, political, social, cultural, etc, ex. Ayatollah ryhollah khomeini was iran"s supreme leader from 1979- Mandela became a more powerful figure not a lesser one the longer he was in jail eventually they had to release him because the governments legitimacy decreased as the martyrs increased a. fotheringham. The current government in afghanistan claims legitimacy based entirely on a legal source winning an election. Yet this has no historical basis for legitimizing. Instead the winner of today"s election will largely be seen as illegitimate because he is elected. Systems of government have to grow from the existing traditions or no one will believe it to be legit: the institution component of states.
