Week 5: the feminist challenge: early and late 20. Simone de beauvoir (1908-1986: went to paris, studied philosophy, became a seminal figure in feminism. Woman is that against which the self is defined: the negative definer of man, the second sex, woman as other . In other cases the other sets up a reciprocal claim: workers have organized, colonized peoples have organized, women gain only what men grant: taken nothing, only recieved. Women"s effort has only ever been a symbolic agitation. Science, social science has moved on the idea that biology determines all: facticity: things attributed to us by society, situation: our agency, to act for ourselves. In existentialism the most important thing is acting for yourself and making some meaning of your own life: men transcend themselves. Why not women: successful women avoid being classed with women, masculine is being (want to measure themselves with men) Women seemed to seek male protection and forgo liberty.
