The realist perspective the principles of realism. Divided into three schools: classical, strategic and neo realism. Why do we try to think theoretically: to apply it to different countries and policies, theories reduce the complexities of the world. Give us guidelines to sort it all out: broadens perspective see same event from different understandings, good opportunity to sort out how we understand the world. What marks classical realism from the others: tend to be pessimistic perspective, ground much of their analysis on this understanding of negative view of human nature. States will behave how humans do: also very concerned with ethics what is the right thing to do. In aftermath of the persian wars between greek city-states and the persian empire (500-479 bc), the greek poleis formed two alliances or leagues: delian league was the first alliance. Athens supplied most of the military force to the delian league thanks to its superior naval fleet.
