POLS 3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Mpla, Idi Amin
Document Summary
Lecture 20: upheaval, collapse and conflict in africa. Since independence, interstate war (that is, war between states) in africa has been a remarkably rare event. Tanzania invaded uganda in 1979 to remove ugandan president idi amin. In 1977-78 somalia invades ethiopia (to reclaim somali-inhabited areas in eastern ethiopia) From 1998 to 2000 ethiopia and eritrea fought a border war. The cold war refers to the ideological stand-off between the united states and the soviet. The long peace refers to the absence of direct war between the us and the ussr during this time. While there may have been a cold peace directly between the us and ussr, other regions carried the burden of war. Many african states became battlegrounds between superpowers. Until 1977, the soviets provided military aid to somalia and the us provided military aid to neighbouring ethiopia who they were at war with. When somalia invade ethiopia in 1977 the superpowers switched sides.
