Divergent economic and social issues in 1867. Accommodation and compromise at the federal level. Competition between both levels of government: alberta, quebec, west vs, atlantic. Wanted a closed economy and an east-west economy. Importing things and exporting cost a lot of money. Sjam set up have a protective economic environment: continues to this day with justin trudeau. Both parties have the same basic economic ideology: capitalism, making money no remarkable change in economic policies. Path dependence: once a policy is in place you can only really change in small increments. Montreal was canada"s finance and commerce hub. Business sector opposed to wealth redistribution: opposed to any social welfare, did not want to spread money across the country (especially quebec) Farming and logging industry: opposed high tariffs, wanted free trade with the usa. Rail and tariff policies undermined regional economy: moved business center to ontario and quebec. Manufacturing sector exposed to ontario: was dwarfed by the other markets.
