Lecture seven - studying criminal justice: policy analysis, pal: policy analysis is the disciplined application of intellect to public problems . Policy studies vs. policy science (vs. policy evaluation); Empirical analysis: approach depends upon whats being studied, and who"s doing the studying, policy theories, theories are differentiated by the key concepts that are at the heart of the explanation (grouped into families) Society-based: interest group competition (pluralism); class (neo-marxist)l identity (race and gender); elites; political culture public opinion. Policy community/ networks- based: riddell"s middle lens of political science, criminal justice policymaking as in uenced by the political and policy process, provide insight into the relationships between citizens and the state, between government actors within the state. Policy cycle comes full cycle: policy cycle: making decisions, consulting with interested individuals, groups and organizations, policy development is the bureaucracy, of cial policy process.
