Document Summary

This week we will look at one of the dark sides of politics. Lobbying is sometimes described as the world"s second oldest profession, after prostitution. Both professions have image problems, and it can be argued that the two are equally difficult to police. There has long been a wild west flavour to the work of lobbyists in whose world anything seemed to go in the pursuit of influence and riches. After completing this unit, you should be able to: assess the role and activities of lobbyists, describe the principal features of the lobbying act and the lobbyists" code of conduct, identify the weaknesses in the rules and enforcement. All required materials can be found under ares in the top navigation. This week"s readings look at lobbying from three perspectives. Nancy holmes, a lawyer with the library of parliament, explains how lobbyist registration works. Before you proceed in the unit be sure to watch the following two videos.
