POLS 3490 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Force Works, Hegemony, John Mueller
Document Summary
Lecture 4: ethnicity as a source of conflict ii. Are there solutions for posen: reducing conflict by understanding the other sides point of view, reducing conflict by way of education and dialogue. John mueller says (p. 63) that most people most of the time do not have much difficulty getting along and creating useful rules and patterns of conduct that allow them to coexist peacefully. Ethnicity, then, does not always lead to conflict. To support his case, mueller chooses the hardest cases. Early on in the paper (second paragraph) mueller offers a model thesis statement. The article explicitly fulfills so many elements in the liberal/believer paradigm. For mueller, ethnicity is constructed or invented. People are instead driven by hooliganism and love of violence for violence sake. Certainly supposedly peace-loving canadians look different when they are at a hockey game. Here it is okay to participate in a carnival of violence .
